Students are a top focus of our coverage at Spotlight Schools and we're always looking for ways to center their voices in our stories. To help in that effort, Spotlight Schools has had several students serving as editorial interns in the newsroom.

We're pleased to announce Amelia Gutierrez as the latest student reporter to join the team. She is a senior at Los Alamitos High School and reached out to Spotlight Schools with an interest to contribute reporting last spring.

"At this internship, I hope to develop my skills as a journalist, and gain job and marketing experience," Amelia wrote in an email message to Spotlight Schools.

Amelia is already a published journalist. Last school year was her first year as a contributing writer for the Griffin Gazette, the student newsroom at Los Alamitos High School. She covered a variety of topics including the trend of "quadchella" events at schools, fashion critiques and an insightful satirical story skewering the competitive climate friends face due to the college admissions process. She will continue in the journalism class at the high school this year. Spotlight Schools plans to co-publish some of Amelia's stories with the student publication to broaden our reach.

When she is not attending school, Amelia enjoys reading, writing, scrapbooking, and learning new languages. Her hobbies also include dancing, singing, and writing short stories.

Another fun fact: she loves the popular noodle dish known as pancit. "My favorite type of food is Filipino food, because it represents my culture and my family history," Amelia shared.

"Student journalists have a vital role to play in shedding light on what is happening at campuses in Orange County," said Jeannette Andruss, co-founder of Spotlight Schools. "We’re thrilled to have Amelia contribute her perspective to our coverage.”

Internship Tradition

Amelia joins a short list of students that have interned for Spotlight Schools. The program has had four participants since 2021. The internship program has added depth to our coverage while offering mentorship opportunities to local aspiring journalists.

Bella Kim, our first editorial intern, is heading to Stanford University this fall where she plans to study journalism and creative writing. Last school year, Spotlight Schools was able to work with Jaya Eapen and Katie Arnoult. The two are now the co-editors in chief of the Griffin Gazette in their final year at Los Alamitos High School.

Meet Our New Editorial Interns
The two rising juniors at Los Alamitos High will contribute student-centered coverage in the 2024-25 school year.

Each internship lasts roughly six months. Spotlight Schools is committed to compensating our interns for their work offering a stipend for participating in the program. Interested in being an intern? Email hello@spotlightschools.com.
