Two days after voting to part ways with the superintendent, the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education could name an interim replacement for the outgoing Jason Glass, Ed.D.

Closed Session Meeting at 3:45pm

  • Public Employee Appointment Title: Acting Superintendent; Interim Superintendent; Superintendent: The agenda lists only this item on the closed session agenda to name an interim superintendent. As mentioned above, Dr. Glass is now on paid administrative leave after the board voted 3-2 to approve a “mutual separation agreement” with him. His last day is May 31. Dr. Glass started in the position on July 1, 2025 under a four-year contract with a base salary of $435,000 a year.
  • Large Number of Public Commenters Expected: At the May 12 meeting, several speakers pleaded with the board to not fire Dr. Glass. There was no public comment regarding the superintendent’s job following the closed-session meeting vote.

Public comment at the May 12 special meeting of the LBUSD Board of Education.

  • Board President Sheri Morgan told attendees at the May 12 study session there would be an opportunity for public comment at the next regular meeting, scheduled for May 14. Several LBUSD parent groups are actively encouraging people via social media to show up and speak.
  • District parent Erika Hennon Rule writes a Substack focused on LBUSD governance. In a post published May 14 she wrote of the meeting: "We should be watching closely to see whether the interim [appointee] is internal or external, whether the decision brings stability or more disruption, and how much explanation the board believes the public deserves. Even if the board is legally permitted to make that appointment without public comment, legal authority and transparency are not the same."
  • In a statement issued on May 13, Board President Morgan wrote: "During this transition period, it is imperative that our students continue to receive the highest quality education and support. Service to our students, employees and families will be our highest priority.  Families should expect schools to continue operating as usual. Students will continue to be supported by teachers, staff, principals and District leaders. The Board is focused on ensuring that this transitional period does not distract from our core mission– teaching, learning and education. The Board recognizes the importance of the coming weeks and will act to provide stability and progress.  Further comments will be brought forward as needed."
  • Morgan told Spotlight Schools via text message that she will issue a press release following today's meeting.
