The Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) Board of Education has officially appointed Natalie Johnson to serve as the Area 4 Trustee, filling a vacancy that was declared on March 5.
Johnson brings a strong commitment to student advocacy and a deep understanding of district priorities. As a parent of two students at Laurel Elementary, she has been actively engaged in the BOUSD community. She has demonstrated her dedication by participating in Board meetings and speaking on important topics, including campus safety and the District’s fencing improvement projects.
During the interview process, Johnson impressed the Board of Trustees with her knowledge of key educational issues, including the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), as well as the challenges facing school districts statewide, such as declining enrollment and chronic absenteeism.
“Natalie’s thoughtful approach, firsthand experience as a BOUSD parent, and clear understanding of the complexities facing our District made her a strong candidate for this role,” said Board President Carrie Flanders. “We are confident that she will be a dedicated advocate for students, families, and the broader BOUSD community.”
Superintendent Brinda Leon also expressed her support for the appointment, stating, “We are excited to welcome Natalie Johnson to the Board of Education. Her engagement, insight, and commitment to student success will be a valuable addition as we continue our work to support all learners and address the evolving needs of our District.”
Johnson will serve as the Area 4 Trustee through the remainder of the current term, working alongside fellow Board members to guide district policy and decision-making in support of BOUSD’s mission to empower students for success. Trustee Area 4 is up for re-election in November.
Johnson is an experienced leader and educator with a background in student development and educational leadership. Currently serving as an assistant director with a public charter school, she oversees and supports special education. Her background includes experience as both an education facilitator and classroom teacher, with a focus on personalized learning and student-centered instruction. She has served on Laurel Elementary’s School Site Council for the last three years and as a PTO Special Education representative for the last five years. Johnson holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Biola University.
